Football commentators and luminaries are sharing their fond memories of Ron Barassi as Melbourne gears up to celebrate the great man’s life at his state funeral today.

Fellow legend Leigh Matthews talked to Millsy and Karl about the impact Barassi had on the game on 6PR Breakfast, especially considering the path Barassi forged.

“In the bigger picture I think we will remember Ron Barassi as a football person rather than with any specific club; I think he transcends being identified with just one club,” Mr Matthews said.

“People didn’t just barrack for the team; they barracked for Ron Barassi. He was a huge character in the sport.”
