In recent weeks, Mornings with Liam Barlett has shone the light on some heartbreaking stories from foster families who say there is a pattern of dysfunction and lack of respect within Department of Communities.

Today, two more people have contacted the program wanting to break their silence.

“Susan” has been a foster carer for 15 years, caring for over 200 children. She describes herself as being “battle-weary.”

“It’s just constant banging your head against a wall,” she told Liam Bartlett.

Susan is a strong advocate for foster children being given the chance to “thrive, not just survive.”

“Unfortunately that can create waves when you’re a strong advocate for children in care,’ she said.

Susan claims foster carers who create waves are “black listed” or threatened with having children removed.

“It’s just ludicrous.

“The bullying and harassment, I don’t think the public has any idea.”

For over 10 years, “Molly” has been a foster carer. A child she raised from birth was returned to the biological mother and Molly claims the child is now with a drug-using household and regularly seen wearing only underwear.

“She really flowered and she went to live with family and that’s always the ultimate goal.

“We knew she was well cared for.

“Now she is returned [to the biological mother] and all I’ve head from different family members is she in danger.”

Molly said she has been told the child will be “flogged” and is in a home with domestic violence.

“It’s reunification at all costs,” she said.

The Minister for Child Protection and Communities, Simone McGurk, was contacted for comment.
