Ride sharers plan airport shut-down in demand for better pay, conditions
More than 500 ride share drivers are set to blockade Perth Airport’s vehicle waiting areas tonight in an effort to demand better pay and benefits from companies including Uber and Didi.
The action will take place between 7 and 9pm tonight, and has been shared via social media via a message stating,” This is for all of us; we will make them pay”.
Perth Uber & Didi drivers spokesperson Mohamed Ahmed told Sean Cowan on 6PR Mornings they were planning to protest peacefully, but were united in their demands.
“We pay our own registration, we pay our own insurance, we pay for fuel and we put all of our effort and energy into this; we are united, and we want to deliver our voice so we can get better working conditions,” Mr Ahmed said.

In a statement, an Uber spokesperson said the following:
“We’re aware of the planned action and have been in contact with relevant authorities and local drivers to ensure Perth residents and visitors can still use Uber to get around town in a safe and reliable manner.”
“Uber has long been an advocate for better protections and standards for all Aussie platform workers, and we support the recent legislation passed by the Federal Government that sets out to raise the bar for gig workers.”
