Safe Night Space forced to close despite $3.1 million in funding
A shelter providing vulnerable women a place to sleep will close after two years as the organisation managing the Safe Night Space facility were left with no choice but to close.
Chief executive officer of Ruah, Debra Zanella, says they’ve been working “tirelessly” to find alternative accommodation for the women who use the shelter.
“Advocacy by the lord mayor, by us … has seen the state government step up and actually offer to fund this now for another two years which is great, she told Gary Adshead.

Perth’s lord mayor, Basil Zempilas, says the council won’t turn back on a decision to turn the site at Rod Evans Senior Citizen Centre in East Perth into a a community centre for residents.
“We made it very clear though to everybody that the service would be closing – or at least the facility … would be closing November 30 … that’s what our community has requested,” he said.

He also says it’s “fabulous news” the funding has been secured.
“I’m sorry it’s come so late, I wonder why it didn’t come 12 months ago, or even six months ago,” he said.
