Safely enjoying recreational catches: Expert tips for healthy consumption
Around 4.2 million Australian adults, are estimated to engage in recreational fishing annually. While seafood is typically deemed safe and nutritious, Australians encounter health issues, including bacterial and fish parasite infections, scombroid poisoning, and ciguatera poisoning, stemming from their own catches.
CEO of the Food Safety Information Council Lydia Buchtmann joined Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons to provide tips on the safest way to eat caught and bought fish.
“There’s a few things you really need to know so you don’t get sick from your catch. The easiest one is cook your fish, cut it very quickly and make sure no parasites get into the flesh. Chill the fish as soon as possible and put it into an Esky so it’s not in the heat for a long time,” Ms Buchtmann said.
“Don’t forget, if you’re not catching any fish and you hope to go to the fish market, take an Esky along with you, with some ice, or ask for some ice so you can take it home safely.”
