UPDATE: WA’s Consumer Protection Commissioner has weighed in on using police deaths as an avenue for scamming people, describing the activity as “devastating.”

“I know we call them scammers; they’re criminals,” Commissioner Trish Blake told Jo McManus on 6PR Afternoons.

“There is no conscience, they’re is no goodness in what they’re doing, and as I often say they prey on heightened emotions.”

A 6PR listener has warned scam callers are using the recent discussion of police losing their lives in the line of duty to steal money from the public.

Listener Elena told Mick and Gena onĀ 6PR Breakfast she was called at her place of work.

“He didn’t provide me with any identifying information about himself or the unit that he was calling for,” Elena said.
