Western Australian Police will offer drink spiking self-testing kits to anyone who suspects they have been a victim on drink-spiking, in a bid to catch perpetrators.

The kits can identify more than 600 drugs and provide prompt testing which is crucial.

WA Police Acting Commander, Gordon Fairman told Oly Peterson on Perth Live that people should test as soon as possible, with some drugs metabolising within 12 hours.

“Forty-eight hours is the top limit for us. Ideally as soon as possible as some of the drugs will be metabolised very quickly” he says.

“If a person wants to make a report that they believe they’ve been spiked, any of the 24-hour police stations in the metropolitan area and any police station in the country has access to the kits.”

“We’ll make sure the person is ok, whether or not there us any other crimes that need to be reported that night, and if not we will go through with the drink spiking kits and where to go from there.”

WA Police Acting Commander Fairman told Oly Peterson that its hard to say if spiking incidents have increased because of the difficulty in obtaining that data.

“This is our big challenge” he said. “But what we do have is a lot of anecdotal reporting.”

“To anyone out there who thinks they’re gonna get away with this, the chances have just decreased significantly… and we make no apologies for the fact that we’re going to target the offenders aggressively.”
