Selling furniture to cope: The suffering caused by Robodebt laid bare
The Robodebt Inquiry has uncovered hundreds of tragic stories from ordinary Australians of struggling under the illegal process.
Australian Financial Review National Affairs columnist Jennifer Hewett shared one such story in the media this week, and told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings it was extremely difficult to find that her stepmother had begun selling furniture to cover debts she was told she owed.
“I asked what was going on, and then I discovered to my horror that Centrelink was pursuing her for thousands and thousands of dollars of debt,” Ms Hewett said.
“She had no money at all for anything; she was terribly embarrassed, terribly fearful and she was selling off things to try and make ends meet.”
