The Lowy Institute is pushing for more public holidays to be added to the Australian calendar as they say our current holidays do not reflect our multicultural society.

Australia currently has 7 public holidays, but experts are calling for two more to be added with Diwali and Lunar New Year as the obvious choices.

“I think it’s a great idea to truly reflect the modern, diverse, multicultural nation that we are,” Hugh Piper, Program Lead at Asia Pacific Development for Diplomacy and Defence Dialogue told 6PR Breakfast.

“There is a whole range of cultures and religions in Australia that each have their own days, and people should have the flexibility to take the public holidays that reflect their cultures and belief.”
