Should the banks back cash? Debate raised over moral responsibility
During Gary Adshead’s interview with Queensland MP Bob Katter on 6PR Mornings, the often-outspoken politician demanded action on cash use from banks and retailers, purporting they have a legal right to accept cash form customers.
As it turns out, this isn’t necessarily true – but does that preclude the morality of the situation?
Many groups and individuals, including Swinburne University Adjunct Professor Steve Worthington, are now calling on banks and supermarkets to do the right thing, despite whatever legal framework is in place.
“They need to make clear to you the terms and conditions on which they are prepared to provide you that service, at the very least,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Trish Blake told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons.
