The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has spent six months investigating why a charter flight to Tasmania was unable to take off, eventually finding it was because the pilots left the hand brake on.

Veteran pilot and aviation expert Byron Bailey told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast the plane – a Saab 340 – is an older plane with less sophisticated instruments, including the big red park brake light, apparently.

“The final thing you do before you take off though is check your flap, check your air brakes and check your speed and instruments are set,” Captain Bailey said.

“I think the pilots probably got a little rap on the knuckles for this one.”
