Wine producers in Canberra are fighting for the ‘prosecco’ label on Australian wines.

The European Union wants the label to apply specifically to grapes from the Italian region but Australian Grape & Wine CEO Lee McLean says it’s not fair play.

“That’s what the Italians would have us want … there’s plenty of people who know what prosecco is, but not many who know what glera is,” he told 6PR Mornings host Gary Adshead.

Mornings listeners were left bemused by the planned move, telling Adshead and 6PR digital producer and wine critic David Prestipino that Australia should just establish its own name for sparkling wines.
