Local sporting associations have joined forces to condemn the abuse of referees and umpires after suffering a number of losses as current officials quit the position.

Mandurah Basketball Association, along with a number of other Peel-based clubs, have taken a public stand against physical and verbal attacks against umpires and referees.

Australian Sports Association Director of Coaching and Officiating Cameron Tradell told Jo McManus on 6PR Afternoons it was a shame officials were being punished for doing their jobs.

“The officials are volunteers or they’re doing something for a limited amount of money – to thenĀ  put them under that sort of pressure it’s just completely unacceptable,” Mr Tradell said.
