The push for a Perth based national rugby league team has taken a blow.

The NRL says it wants to work directly with the state government to formulate a potential ownership model that doesn’t involve the Western Bears consortium.

The league says that bid is now out of the running for one of three potential new licenses.

Reporter Michael Chammas told Oliver Peterson it’s understood the consortium wasn’t keen on paying a licensing fee.
