‘Take control’: Richard Goyder becomes the next Perth executive to head east
Richard Goyder, the chairman of Woodside Petroleum, Qantas and AFL, has become the next Perth executive to relocate to the east coast for the foreseeable future.
The news comes with Wesfarmers’ chief executive Rob Scott and several senior members moving east to escape WA’s quarantine rules.
Speaking to Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast, Mr Goyder says his role has been challenging with the WA travel restrictions involving quarantine.
“It’s just been too hard for me to do my job with Qantas and the AFL, based here with the border rules, the way they’ve been and the recent change,” he said.
When asked what the AFL is planning to do with WA based teams, Mr Goyder said that the expenses of quarantining players are an important factor in deciding what to do for the upcoming season.
“I don’t think there’s going to be a great appetite for players outside Western Australia to be quarantining,” he told Parker.
“There’s a very significant cost to the AFL in doing some of the things we’ve had to do over the last couple of years. It’s a significant issue for both West Coast and Fremantle because they need home games, and they need their crowds, but it’s also a big issue for the AFL.”
