Telstra is likely to axe up to 2,800 jobs, culling up to nine per cent of its workforce.

The telco is beginning consultation with 377 employees today as it works to reduce costs across the business.

Telstra Chief Executive Vicki Brady told media the majority of cuts are likely to occur by the end of the year.

Communications Workers Union National Assistant Secretary James Perking told Gary Adshead it was an “absolutely appalling” decision they were only alerted to when Telstra informed the Australian Stock Exchange this morning.
