The dung beetle crisis explained

Concerns over a lack of dung beetles may have been overblown according to an expert.

The issue was first raised on The Rumour File in which it was suggested dung beetles were no longer being imported into the country.

Associate Professor from the School of Biological Science at UWA, Theo Evans, told Millsy there isn’t necessarily a shortage.

“We’ve got lots of different types of species of dung beetle, and they are active at different times of the year,” he said on 6PR Afternoons.

“So in the middle of the summer … we have huge numbers of dung beetles in the southern part of WA, so no shortage at that time of year.

“We’ve got some (species) in winter, most are in summer, but we’ve got basically none that are active in Spring and Autumn.

“And so when people are talking about having a lack of dung beetles, they really are referring to the Spring.”
