The last hoorah: Eagles V Demons

Article image for The last hoorah: Eagles V Demons

The West Coast Eagles defeated the Melbourne Demons by 27-points at Optus Stadium in the final AFL game before the League goes on a hiatus until at least May 31.

West Coast came out firing in the first quarter kicking five goals while holding the Demons to a goalless term. But the Dees fired back kicking three goals to the Eagles two in the second term.

But Melbourne were no match for Liam Ryan who kicked three goals, while Tim Kelly kicked his first major as an Eagle, resulting in the 12.6 (78) to 7.9 (51) scoreline.

Melbourne Coach Simon Goodwin and captain Max Gawn spoke after the game.

“The final siren was a little bit weird. Who knows when footy’s going to happen again, and footy’s normal for us,” Gawn says.

“I’m proud of our players, I’m proud of Melbourne’s players as well for putting on a show for a brief time. Hopefully we put a smile on some people’s faces for few days. I didn’t miss a minute, I watched every game,” West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson said after the game.

Just after AFL CEO Gil McLachlan announced the suspension of the AFL, 6PR got the reaction from inside the Eagles and Demons rooms before they ran onto the ground.

“There’s a few boys who are walking in saying ‘oh well we’re just going to go as hard as we can for this four quarters and love the game and enjoy being out there’,” Jaymie Graham told 6PR.

“We were with the boys when the news came out… we were able to get them in and just have a chat about the fact that it’s going to be the last game for a while; we’ve had a really big season where we’ve changed a few things and lets make sure we give it our best shot,” Melbourne Assistant coach Alan Richardson.
