Melbourne researchers have found a daily tablet can reduce allergic reactions for people who suffer from hay fever and thunderstorm asthma.

The tablet contains extracts of various grass pollens and needs to be taken for multiple months a year for several years in order to retrain the immune system.

Head of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Laboratory at Monash University, Professor Menno van Zelm, believes the medication will be successful for lots of people suffering from allergies.

“The main thing is to optimize the medication so it’s available for more people and successful in more people,” he told 6PR Breakfast.

However, the treatment won’t work for everyone, as cautioned by Professor van Zelm.

“Some people don’t respond well to it and some people don’t have much benefit, so its really making the medication as strong as possible without giving side effects,” he said.
