Calls to put the butt out on WA balconies have been made after the Queensland state government effectively banned smoking on balconies of apartment buildings.

New Queensland strata laws mean that tobacco smoke drift from the balcony of one lot into a neighbouring lot is classed as a hazard.

The Head of Australian Apartment Advocacy, Samantha Reece, says WA should follow the lead.

“I think it’s a natural progression,” she said. “We actually banned smoking in hotels, we banned it in nightclubs, we banned it in airports and airplanes, so this is now for me the next natural step.”

Ms Reece is calling on the state government to closely monitor the situation in Queensland and make changes if it sees necessary.

“When you’re buying an apartment, you’re buying part of a community and the balcony – even though it’s attached to your apartment – is actually a common space.” Ms Reece said.
