The Word of the Year 2023: confusing, depressing… and a bit fun
It’s an Australian tradition to take a bit of cheek and shorten words to their base elements… even when their pretty upsetting.
Macquarie Dictionary have picked out “cozzie livs” – a shortening of of “cost of living” – has knocked out other contenders including Bazball, skimpflation and the vaguely worrying “scrotox”.
Macquarie Dictionary’s managing editor Victoria Morgan told Millsy and Karl onĀ 6PR Breakfast the shortlisted words reflected the rapidly-changing zeitgeist within today’s cultural mixing pot.
“A lot of the words are relatively fun ways of referring to serious topics, most of which have affected every one of us,” Ms Morgan said.
