Tonight the City of Joondalup will vote on an amendment to ensure all new childcare developments go in commercial zoning rather than residential.

This means it will need to be located next to businesses such as shops and petrol stations.

Speaking with Liam Bartlett, Managing Director of Strategic Property Group Trent Fleskens said the economics won’t stack up for future operators.

“Childcare operators and developers won’t be able to come in without making massive losses,” he said.

When Mr Fleskens approached one Councillor about the matter, he said he was told, “why can’t the aunties and grandmas look after the kids?”

“So this is what we’re facing,” said Mr Fleskens.

“No other city come even close to considering this [type of amendment].”
