Thousands evacuate as flood crisis hits Melbourne and regional towns
Homes and businesses are under water just a short distance from Melbourne’s CBD after the Maribyrnong River burst its banks early this morning after heavy rainfall yesterday.
Several regions across Victoria are battling a flooding event not seen since the early 1970s, with thousands of residents ordered to evacuate on Friday.
Nine News reporter Maggie Raworth is in Maribyrnong, 8km north-west of Melbourne’s CBD, and told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings rescues were under way and the floodwaters had yet to peak.

“Today we’ve seen multiple rescues carried out, we’ve seen people waving for help from the top of their roofs of their homes, even from on top of their cars… you know, families one by one are being carried on these boats to safety,” she told Bartlett.
Looks like the water level is starting to drop 🤞🤞 pic.twitter.com/wRcQF1gb5j
