‘To be Australian is to be myself’: Mechelle Turvey named WA’s Australian of the Year

Mechelle Turvey – the mother of allegedly murdered teenager Cassius Turvey – has been named the WA Australian of the Year for 2024.

She has been recognised for her courage, care and compassion for others in the wake of her son’s death.

The 57-year-old told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast she’s uncomfortable with the attention she’s received, but feels it’s an opportunity to continue spreading her message.

I do things passionately because I want to, I want to make a difference; even with the small differences, I want to help people,” Ms Turvey said.
