‘Tobacco free by 2030’: The push to wipe out smoking
Top health experts are calling for the state to become tobacco free by 2030, it’s been revealed on 6PR Mornings.
State and leading national experts in tobacco control will be coming together for a two-day symposium to reinforce tobacco control.
Ashely Reid, Cancer Council WA CEO, told Liam Bartlett that its possible despite being eight years away.
“We think it is possible, as recently as the year 2000, about 25 per cent of adults smoked daily,” he explained.
“Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable illness and death in Australia.”
The aim is to halve that number by 2030, lowering the smoking rate from around 10 per cent to 5 per cent.
