Tourism Council: Scrapped Perth Ashes Test will hurt businesses
The Tourism Council of Western Australia says business owners will be financially hurt by Cricket Australia’s decision to move the fifth Ashes test match away from Perth.
Cricket Australia confirmed that there would be no Test match held at Optus Stadium in mid-January, blaming onerous border restrictions on the decision.
CEO of the Tourism Council of WA Evan Hall says an event like the Ashes would have given a significant boost to the economy.
“A big event like that would have brought people into town, into Perth, spending money in our hotels, at the stadium,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“And this is where we desperately need that injection of activity, and frankly cash, to save the jobs and businesses
“Because it’s Perth that’s been smashed by the international and interstate travel restrictions.”
