Tree advocates not convinced by government’s lukewarm greening strategy

Proponents of increasing Perth’s greenery are nonplussed at the State Government’s newly-announced Urban Greening Strategy, labelling it a half-hearted attempt to placate the need to alleviate the city’s miniscule tree canopies.

WA Tree Canopy Advocates deputy chair Sarah Allchurch told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons the Cook Government’s heart is in the right place, but more needs to be done.

“Any tree planted is fine by us… but the plan they’ve put forward doesn’t include any protections for trees on private land, and that is where Perth is losing more than three quarters of our trees,” Ms Allchurch said.

“It’s like trying to fight a bushfire with a garden hose; it’s just not enough.”
