The coasts of the US South West and Mexico have been engulfed by the most rainfall experienced in the region in 83 years, mere days after wildfires devastated Maui.

Tropical Storm Hilary brought historic levels of rain and winds when it hit land on Monday, and while it did largely dissipate it still managed to wreak havoc across multiple US and Central American states.

Press PLAY to hear more about the record-breaking storms

6PR and Nine News US Correspondent Lauren Tomasi told Millsy and Karl onĀ 6PR Breakfast the population is reeling from a series of rare weather events.

“We had the record-breaking storms, then Los Angeles was hit by a magnitude-5 earthquake; not a huge one but for a city that’s on high alert it’s a bit of a double-whammy.”
