WA government set to shut down iconic Horizontal Falls tourism experience
The Western Australian government is set to prohibit boats from navigating the Horizontal Falls on the Kimberley coast. The ban will apply to all tour operators starting in 2026, except for Seaplane Adventures, which will be permitted to operate until 2028, when its license expires.
Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall joined Oliver Peterson on Perth Live to discuss the implications that the closure will have on West Australia’s tourism.
“Traversing Horizontal Falls and diving with whale sharks are two iconic experiences we use to project Western Australia around the world. So losing traversing the Horizontal Falls will have an immediate and pretty devastating impact on the tour operators, businesses and jobs from the loss of those day tours,” Mr Hall said.
“But the wider impact is from the loss of people coming to Western Australia because we haven’t captured their imagination with this iconic experience.”
