WA nurses won’t rule out further strikes after IRC’s suspension threat

Australian Nurses Federation state secretary Janet Reah will “fight to the bitter end”, after the Industrial Relations Commission threatened to deregister the organisation in the wake of failed negotiations with the McGowan government over pay and working conditions, and hasn’t ruled out further strikes in the wake of the IRC move.

The IRC wrote to the ANF yesterday warning it was considering summoning the union to “show cause why its registration should not be suspended” after nurses and midwives took statewide strike action last Friday in defiance of IRC orders.

Reah, pictured above with nurses at last Friday’s rally, told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings the WA “government seems to think we’re a bit stupid”.

Press PLAY to hear why nurses are fuming even more now

“We’ve all got degrees, some of us have post-graduates, some of us have masters, some of us even have PHDs, I’m pretty sure they can read an offer and decide for themselves whether they like it or not,” she said in reply to being accused of not selling the government’s pay offer to members.

“I’m not going to lie to my members and say to them, ‘wow, this is a fantastic offer I think you should take it’.”

If you’re a nurse or know someone who is, we want to hear your story.
