WA Police demand sweeping alcohol bans in revealing memo

A “bombshell letter” stating WA Police are demanding wide-ranging liquor restrictions across WA has potentially outlined a rift between police and the State Government on how to deal with ongoing alcohol abuse and connected violence.

A letter to the Liquor Licensing Director Lanie ChoppingĀ  from a Deputy Police Commissioner outlines tougher rules for the Kimberley, Pilbara, Midwest-Gascoyne and Goldfields-Esperance regions.

But Liquor Stores Association of WA CEO Peter Peck told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings until real and concerted effort and funds are put toward the issue, harsher restrictions will do little to nothing.

“Anybody can ban liquor, we could turn off the tap tomorrow and people are still going to be drunk,” Mr Peck said.
