Indigenous Elders are calling for Lake Monger to be renamed Galup due to the colonial history associated with the current name.

Whadjuk Noongar Elder and senior lecturer at UWA Glenda Kickett told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live there needs to be more truth-telling.

“The lake is also a massacre site,” said Ms Kickett. 

“We want the history of the local people … to be acknowledged.”

“There are so many things attached to a place and a place name.”
