Warning to pet owners: their microchips may be rendered useless

Reports indicate that a Perth-based microchipping company has gone out of business, which could render your pet’s microchip useless.

Veterinarian Bronwyn Orr alerted 6PR listeners to the issue when she explained to 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl that there are currently no rules, guidelines, or regulations to ensure microchipping companies retain the information in their databases.

“Your pet’s microchip number will still be there when the vet scans it; they’ll still see the number, but it’s not going to go anywhere. They’re not going to know it’s your pet because it won’t be linked to any information,” she said.
