The State Government has revealed a tagging programme in the Swan River could become reality amid elevated concerns about sharks following the death of a 16-year-old girl near the Fremantle Traffic bridge.

Fisheries Minister Don Punch says WA’s first-ever river-based shark barrier will be installed at the Bicton Baths and he is urging other local councils to follow.

“He is quite embarrassing when he talks about this stuff because unfortunately he doesn’t have a great background in fisheries and waterways management,” Karl said on 6PR Breakfast.

“When it comes to our first ever shark barrier, well this is something that has been asked for a couple of years – but in the end at least they are starting to be pro-active.”
