Diesel generators are being switched on in order to support Perth’s power supply, with the age of WA’s existing coal power stations being labelled as a cause.

Energy Minister Bill Johnston told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings WA’s two main coal-powered power stations – Collie and Muja stations – produce more than 550mw each, but are getting towards their use-by date.

“They’re becoming less reliable, so the move to the new energy future is actually demonstrated by these problems,” Mr Johnston said.

Mr Johnston said the future of WA’s energy supply was complex, and a number of different systems would have to be put into place, including renewables.
