‘We tend to underestimate extreme heat’: Why heatwaves should be named
With the current heatwave sweeping across Perth, it has become increasingly important to understand the risks it poses.
The idea of naming heatwaves has been test across Europe, and has proven successful in raising awareness of their dangers.
Climate Council Research Director, Dr. Simon Bradshaw, told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live, “Australia is already a hot country; we are used to extremes, but we do tend to underestimate the risks from extreme heat…”
“Around five times more people in Western Australia have been hospitalised due to extreme heat in recent years…and yes it does claim more lives then all those other threats combined…” Dr. Bradshaw continued.
