‘Weeding’ seaweed sees dramatic improvement in coral regrowth
Citizen scientists have taken to ‘weeding’ underwater reefs to spark coral regrowth.
The act of removing seaweed has helped dramatically improve coral growth by 600 per cent.
Senior research scientist at James Cook University tole Rusty Collett on 6PR Afternoons how much seaweed has taken over the reefs.

“The trend is expected to accelerate and to take over, particularly near shore-reefs,” Ms Smith said.
“We have seen signs of this happening in the Whitsundays and in the Keppel Islands.”
