The National Road Death Toll saw almost 1200 people dead on Australian roads in 2022, a 68% increase compared to 2021.

Max Cameron, Research Professor from the Monash Accident Research Centre told 6PR Breakfast that 2022’s deadly figures are a reflection of the quieter roads we experienced during Covid in 2020 and 2021.

“Just the growth in population and the number of vehicles would increase the road deaths, and you’ve got to give credit to the improved safety of cars generally and the road system,” Professor Cameron said.

“Speeding is the biggest issue – quite honestly no one knows how to prevent all road crashes, people just won’t accept the guidance and the enforcement that they’re given.”
