Why Australians are flocking to WA in ‘remarkable’ turnaround
New research has revealed that around 10 per cent of all Australians are considering moving to Western Australia.
It’s a remarkable turnaround from 2019, when the state was in a “net loss” phase in terms of population.
UWA Demographer, Professor Amanda Davies, said while the handling of the pandemic and a strong jobs market in WA were drawing people in, “push factors” from Sydney and Melbourne were also significant factors.
“What’s happened in Sydney and Melbourne is those cities have grown so very large, it’s very, very difficult to carve out an affordable lifestyle,” she told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.
“And we’ve seen people responding to that for near on two decades now – moving out to those coastal parts of Sydney and Melbourne – what we’re now seeing is people moving a little further afield.”
