Why don’t more women want to do a trade?

Article image for Why don’t more women want to do a trade?

An online summit will be held tonight to help address the staggeringly low numbers of women entering trades in Australia.

Tradeswomen Australia CEO Fiona McDonald says only 2 percent of apprentices and trainees in the core trades of carpentry, automotive and electrical are women – and that figure hasn’t shifted in 25 years.

Speaking with Gareth Parker on Mornings, Ms McDonald said barriers including a lack of information, poor pathways & culture and poor structured support systems for women were keeping the numbers low.
