Wipeout? Kelly Slater on collision course with WA government over mandate
Senator Jacqui Lambie has warned anti-vaccine sports stars will be banned from competing in countries after Kelly Slater became the latest embroiled in controversy.
Lambie told the Today show the 11-time WSL world champion, who has expressed scepticism about vaccines on social media, would not be allowed in Australia unless he was double vaxxed.
“These sports people need to realise most countries over the next few months … unless you are double-vaxxed and lining up for your booster, you ain’t coming,” she said.
Federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck said recent comments by the 49-year-old surfing legend hurt his chances of competing at the Margaret River Pro and Rip Curl Pro in Victoria in April.
He said Slater likely knew the rules and implications when he made the comments, after also backing Novak Djokovic in his fight to play in the Australian Open.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a surfer, or a tennis player, a tourist or anyone else, those are the rules,” Mr Colbeck said.
“I don’t like the chances of him competing in Victoria, and I’d hate to think of what the chances were of him competing in Western Australia.”
