Work security for gig economy employees to be boosted in new laws
The Albanese Government is looking to deliver on promises made earlier this year in relation to new laws that will boost work security for gig economy employees.
Minimum pay, better work conditions, superannuations and leave entitlements are expected for many workers in the gig economy.
Giuseppe Carabetta, Associate professor of employment law with the University of Technology Sydney’s Business School told Mark Gibson on Perth Live that this issue has not had any regulation in Australia since the introduction of gig economy employees.
“The impact on wages is a difficult question as there are serious variations but the government is saying we need to create a floor so there is not a race to the bottom as soon as a new platform pops up,” he told Mark.
“The problem is because there is no floor, you’ve got this risk because if all of the sudden there’s a new digital platform popping up then the players that are currently there have to try compete on that basis.”
