The rubbish collection strike hitting suburbs across Perth and Mandurah has taken an unexpected turn.

Paramedics are treating a man in his 30s who got in the way of a rubbish truck leaving the Cleanaway site in Malaga.

Workers are protesting there and are refusing to empty wheelie bins today in some local government areas, as part of a dispute over penalty rates and conditions.

Nine News and 6PR reporter Ezra Holt told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast the workers are actively chanting and waving flags in front of the site, and potentially approached to close to leaving trucks.
