The Chief Executive of Defence Consultancy Internet 2.0 has 6PR Mornings that there has been a recent increase of cyber attacks coming out of Russia.

Robert Potter told Liam Bartlett that an escalation of attacks by “Conti” against the West has arrived against a backdrop of ransomware groups showing ideological support for the Russian government in recent years.

In a statement, the Conti ransomware group said that “since the West is known to wage its wars primarily by targeting civilians, we will use our resources in order to strike back if the wellbeing and safety of peaceful citizens will be at stake due to American cyber aggression”.

Robert Potter says it’s clear that the Russian government influences their decisions.

“They’re domiciled in Russia, and over time that group has become more and more ideological and become more pro-Kremlin,” he said.

“They’ve certainly hit targets in Australia and New Zealand, although recently most of their priority targets have been in the United States and Europe.”

Press PLAY to hear how Ukraine is developing a cyber-volunteer group to take down these attacks.
