Wyndham-East Kimberley Shire calling for increased military protection along coastline

Wyndham-East Kimberley Shire President David Menzel is advocating for increased military presence along WA’s coastline following the arrival of another asylum seeker boat in the north.

Mr Menzel told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live, “There is certainly not much of a physical [military] presence. I do acknowledge we have Boarder Force and Defence Force that do look after our coastline…But you’d have to ask whether three successful landings in a matter of months, does something need to change?”

“I’m hesitant to criticise, because I know there is a lot of really good people out there doing their best. But something around the methodology is not right. This business model of paying passengers and dropping them off in Australia, I think the message hasn’t got through, that is not the way end up in Australia.”

“Something doesn’t quite stack. Something has changed, so we need to change,” Mr Menzel said.
