Yes and No campaigns go into high gear as referendum date is set

Now that the official date for the Voice to Parliament Referendum is set, those both supporting and against the proposed constitutional change will now run the last leg of their respective campaigns in an effort to sway undecided voters.

Thomas Mayo, for one, has become both a champion for Yes supporters and a lightning rod for No supporters, with his history of pasisonate support for Indigenous people being dragged into the open.

He told Gary Adshead on 6PR Breakfast he has picked up on a general sentiment of equality in his travels across the country, and argues it needs to be enshrined in the constitution.

“Especially young people; they’re say, “Why haven’t we done this already?’ It’s just a matter of fairness,” Mr Mayo said.

Former Prime Minister and No proponent Tony Abbott told Gary he understood the sentiment and hopes of the Yes vote and Anthony Albanese’s speech, but it was short on substance.

“He’s really telling us 1000 politicians can’t be wrong,” Mr Abbott said.

“He said that this would finally allow us to listen to Aboriginal people; that’s not right. We’ve been listening to Aboriginal people for decades.”
