The Supreme Court has found Banksia Hill staff repeatedly broke the law by locking three young detainees in solitary confinement on a “frequent basis.”

The finding means youth detention staff are prohibited from denying exercise and open space to underage detainees.

Former president of the Perth Children’s Court Denis Reynolds told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings he didn’t deny youth incarceration needed to exist.

“That’s not the question here; the question is when that happens, what happens to the children in these facilities?” Mr Reynolds said.
